  • FEATURES

Kangaroo Island holds many secrets waiting to be discovered. Beautiful Kangaroo Island lies 13 kilometres (8 miles) off the coast of South Australia, accessed by a 30 minutes flight from Adelaide or ferry from the mainland. Kangaroo Island shares similarities with the Galapagos Islands in that it is one of the best places in Australia to see native wildlife up close. Over a third of the island is protected by conservation areas and national parks, while lush farmland and small towns contribute to the islands reputation as a food and wine mecca.

Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail is one of Australia’s great walks. With it's towering cliffs of limestone, storm-blasted native coastal scrub and massive arcs of bone white beach and of course the most incredible native wildlife - the Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail is one of the must-do walks in Australia. The 61km trail follows the Rocky River, walk along the wild west coast, take a side trip to Admirals Arch and the Remarkable Rocks, walk to Hanson Bay and return inland through the forests to Kelly Hill. The undulating terrain is moderate graded.

Natural Zoo: Kangaroo Island is sometimes referred to as a "natural zoo" - there are some extra special places where native Australian animals regularly gather. You have opportunities to spot wild koalas, kangaroos, and several species of rare birds including the critically endangered glossy black cockatoo, which lives nowhere else. Many native animals are more active at dawn or dusk, when you could see seals, sea eagles, ospreys, bottlenose dolphins and whales.

  • FAQs

What level of walking experience do I need?
The Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail is categorised as a Grade 4 walking trail under the Australian Walking Track Grading System, meaning that some sections are long, rough and very steep and directional signage is at times limited. Bushwalking experience is recommended.

What do I need to carry?
You will stay at the beachfront cabin each night, and transfer to/from the trail for your day walk on different sections of the trail. You only need to carry a daypack.

What do I need to bring?
We've made things easy by preparing a packing list with all of your essentials. We will provide it to you with your pre-departure information kit.

Is drinking water available along the trail?
Each campground has a rainwater tank which supplies non potable water so it requires treatment prior to drinking.

Is there mobile phone reception on the trail?
Mobile phone reception may be possible with a Telstra 3G or 4G phone service at some of the higher points along the trail, but it is not guaranteed. You should anticipate being out of contact with the outside world for the duration of the five-day walk unless you are carrying a satellite phone or a personal locator device such as an EPIRB.

Download KI Wilderness Trail Audio Tour App
The Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail Audio Tours mobile application includes over thirty guided audio tours to enjoy while you walk. Each tour is rich in immersive soundscapes and narration making the stories of the trail come to life. For each day, there is a geo-enabled map which offers walkers the ability to track your location even without an internet connection. Be sure to download the app and each of the five tours before starting your walk as internet connectivity is severely limited on the island.

In the event that we are forced to change your arrangements, substitute arrangements of a similar standard will be provided. While we will do its utmost to honour its pricing unforeseen circumstances may mean that prices may be subject to change without notice.

Pre-Existing Medical Conditions and Age Limits
You need to advise OCT4 PTY LTD and the tour operator on any pre-existing medical condition, mobility impairment and/or disability that might reasonably be expected to increase the risk of your requiring medical attention, or that might affect the normal conduct of a trip and the enjoyment of other trip members. OCT 4 PTY LTD and the tour operator may require an assessment of your medical condition from a qualified medical practitioner. If you fail to adequately notify the tour operator of any pre-existing medical conditions and/or disability, the tour operator reserves the right, at its reasonable discretion, to cancel your participation in a trip at any time, including after the commencement of your trip, with no right of refund if your medical condition, mobility impairment and/or disability could be reasonably expected to affect the normal conduct of the trip and the enjoyment of other trip members.

    Cancellation by The Tour Operator
The walks take place in very special wilderness settings. The tour operator is at the mercy of nature in all her beauty and all her fury. The tour operator will under no circumstance knowingly place at risk the health and well-being of our guests and guides. In the case of natural threats, acts of God and the like (e.g. bushfires, impassable snow, etc) the tour operator may need to cancel a walk with very little notice. In some cases, this can occur after the walk has commenced. The tour operator reserves the right to cancel any walk up to 60 days prior to departure if a minimum of 4 walkers are unable to meet for a tour. If the tour operator needs to cancel for any reason, the cost of the walk or any other costs associated with travel to the designated pick up point, overnight accommodation, meals, etc will not be covered by the OCT4 PTY LTD and therefore we strongly recommend travel insurance be taken out prior to travel.

    Force Majeure
'Force Majeure' means (without restriction) any event which OCT4 Pty Ltd or its third party providers could not, even with due care, foresee or avoid. Force Majeure covers events such as, but not limited to, adverse weather conditions, fire and all similar events beyond our control. In the case of Force Majeure OCT4 Pty Ltd will not accept liability, and reserves the right to change and cancel trips.

    Evacuations
In rare circumstances, due to injury or unforeseen illness, the tour operator may need to evacuate you from a remote part of the walk. Helicopter evacuations are expensive and in most cases will be at a cost to the customer.

For Australian residents, under the Australian Government Medicare Act, it is prohibited for any domestic travel insurance product to provide any financial reimbursement with regard to ambulance or air ambulance services. We therefore strongly advise our customers to take specific ambulance cover through their health insurance provider. Evacuation cost will not be covered by the OCT4 PTY LTD and therefore it is also strongly recommended that our customers take out travel insurance to cover (amongst other things) the costs associated with evacuation.

    Travel Insurance
In view of the heavy cancellation penalties applied to cancelled reservations in certain circumstances, we strongly recommends suitable travel insurance be purchased at the time the holding deposit is paid. We recommend insurance cover that covers any loss which may be suffered due to cancellation. We also strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance against loss of baggage and medical expenses.
