Set against the remarkable backdrop of the Elder Range and Wilpena Pound in South Australia's Flinders Ranges, this Arkaba walking safari is an opportunity to experience the outback in a style that is both exclusive and authentic.

The Flinders Ranges offers some of Australia's most spectacular outback scenery. Nestled among this ancient geological monument, Arkaba's 60,000 acre private conservancy is home to an incredible array of bird and wildlife now protected by the Arkaba Wildlife Conservancy. Owners of Arkaba protect this ancient land and share it with those in search of an authentic Australian bush experience. This fully guided experience combines an outback exploration with a few key creature comforts and the result is an incredible bush experience. This expert guided 4-day-3-night walking safari traverses the incredible Wilpena Pound and 16,000 hectares of Arkaba's private wildlife conservancy, following the famous Heysen Trail. You’ll learn about the history, geology and ecology of this unique landscape and walk in the shoes of its indigenous owners as you hear stories of their incredible heritage.

2 nights are spent camping in a deluxe swag set atop an elevated timber platform with views of this spectacular desert region. The final night is spent at the restored 1850s Arkaba Homestead - a luxury country farmhouse. All meals on this walk are freshly prepared 3-course affairs, accompanied by fine wine, like minded company and the sounds of the outback.

  • FEATURES

Iconic Australian location: An ancient landscape moulded by millions of years of geological activity, the Flinders Ranges offers some of Australia's most spectacular outback scenery. Arkaba's 60,000 acre private conservancy is home to a wonderous variety of bird and wildlife and a remarkable conservation story.

Historic homestead hideaway: Arkaba is an oasis of comfort and style amidst a harsh and rugged landscape, where guests enjoy a taste of classic Australian country hospitality. Each bedroom has its own ensuite bathroom and opens out onto a shaded verandah with individual views of the surrounding ranges. With decor by wildlife artist, Rosie Woodford-Ganf - think bedheads fashioned from recycled fence posts and fleeces, curtains tied back by gumnut tassles, lights perched on explorers' tripod theodolites - Arkaba retains a sense of history and place.

Outback Walking Safaris: Traversing the ancient landscape of the Flingers Ranges in Outback South Australia, The Arkaba Walk is a four-day experience that immerses walkers in the story of the land.

    Swag Camps (on Night 1 & 2)
Each camp has five permanent swag decks. The low timber decks are slightly elevated, with a shelter extension to the rear of the deck allowing for guests the option to either sleep under the stars, or under cover. Your bed is a 'swag' – the bedding of choice for generations of Australian pioneers, a canvas envelope that is comfy and waterproof, protecting you from the elements. Inside each swag will be an all season's sleeping bag with liner.

Each camp site has two waterless composting toilets – each in their own little 'dunny' shed and strategically located to enjoy the best of the views. Each camp has two bush showers – essentially buckets that will require filling by hand with water warmed on the fire, and equipped with taps to regulate the flow. Some special touches ensure these showers will be a feature of this trip. There is also a covered dining area for meal times in the event of inclement weather.

Arkaba Homestead (On the Final Night)
A classic Flinders building with thick stone walls and shady verandahs, the homestead allows guests to experience the natural beauty of Australia's outback in understated luxury and comfort. Features of the Arkaba Homestead include a library with deep leather armchairs and a large stone fireplace, plus a private open terrace used for canapés at sundown, with breathtaking views out to the ranges beyond.

Five guest rooms are located in the Arkaba Homestead, each with an ensuite bathroom and access to a verandah dotted with lounge chairs, perfect for pursuing Flinders views. The Coachman's Cottage in the corner of the garden provides a fifth guestroom. Wildlife artist, Rosie Woodford-Ganf has touched each guestroom with her artistic skills and whose own art is prominent throughout the Homestead. The rooms are all air conditioned with a mix of king and twin beds with 500 thread count cotton sheets and a choice of pillows to ensure a great night's sleep.

  • Food & Wine

South Australia is one of Australia's great culinary stories: its soils and clean air providing the key natural parameters for fresh and innovative produce.

Arkaba has adopted a 'buy local' principle with its food and wine sourced entirely from South Australian producers and the chef working his own local touches to the menu.

Arkaba's real luxury comes with the fact that it is small and therefore intensely personal – hosted dinners and sharing stories with guides and fellow guests provide an atmosphere more akin to staying with friends in the country, or a private safari lodge.

A purely South Australian wine cellar has been selected to showcase a cross-section of premium wine-growing regions and the grape varieties for which they are best known and respected. The bar is completely open and the chef will adapt very specifically to guest tastes and needs.

Dining around an old wool classing table on the outdoor terrace with the ever-changing light and sounds of the bush all around is a special and uniquely Australian experience. A firepit in the garden provides a great spot to retire after dinner with a glass of wine or port to watch the stars appear over this ancient landscape.

  • Weather and Climate

The climate in the Southern Outback is generally dry and sunny year round.

    AUTUMN (Mar - May)
This season provides warm days with cooler evenings. Day temperatures will average between 15 – 20°C with the later part of the season being cooler. The evening temperatures will be much cooler and warm clothing will be required. As the days cool, wildlife becomes more active during the middle parts of the day.

    WINTER (Jun - Aug)
Walking in winter is particularly beautiful in the Flinders with cold nights and days that are warm with some spectacular sunrises and sunsets. This season provides ideal walking weather with daily temperatures of around 15°C and occasionally as high as 25°C. The evenings and early mornings will be very cold and winter clothing will be required. During July/August temperatures can drop to below 0°C at night. A roaring camp fire and warming glasses of red wine will be enjoyed each night and after winter rains, with surface water in the creeks, wildlife will be far-reaching with lots of food available and very active throughout the day. Emus will generally begin laying from August onwards.

    SPRING (Sep - Nov)
Spring in the Flinders Ranges is undeniably spectacular! It is a great time to spot emu chicks as they begin hatching and the outback brown and orange colours are bright with red, yellow, white and purple with native plants and wildflowers. Migratory birds will generally begin to appear and wedgetail eagle chicks will hatch between August and September, fledging by November. The abundance of and timing of the wildflowers depends entirely on rainfall throughout the year. Day temperatures can average between 20°C-25°C with the later part of the season getting warmer. The evening temperatures will be cooler in the early part of the season so a warm layer of clothing will be required.

    SUMMER (Dec - Feb)
The walking tour is not operate during the hot, summer months, although you can still book a stay at Arkaba Homestead which is open year round and enjoy shorter walks as part of guided activities that are included in the tariff.

    Cancellation by The Tour Operator
The walks take place in very special wilderness settings. The tour operator is at the mercy of nature in all her beauty and all her fury. The tour operator will under no circumstance knowingly place at risk the health and well-being of our guests and guides. In the case of natural threats, acts of God and the like (e.g. bushfires, impassable snow, etc) the tour operator may need to cancel a walk with very little notice. In some cases, this can occur after the walk has commenced. The tour operator reserves the right to cancel any walk up to 60 days prior to departure if a minimum of 4 walkers are unable to meet for a tour. If the tour operator needs to cancel for any reason, the cost of the walk or any other costs associated with travel to the designated pick up point, overnight accommodation, meals, etc will not be covered by the OCT4 PTY LTD and therefore we strongly recommend travel insurance be taken out prior to travel.

    Force Majeure
'Force Majeure' means (without restriction) any event which OCT4 Pty Ltd or its third party providers could not, even with due care, foresee or avoid. Force Majeure covers events such as, but not limited to, adverse weather conditions, fire and all similar events beyond our control. In the case of Force Majeure OCT4 Pty Ltd will not accept liability, and reserves the right to change and cancel trips.

    Evacuations
In rare circumstances, due to injury or unforeseen illness, the tour operator may need to evacuate you from a remote part of the walk. Helicopter evacuations are expensive and in most cases will be at a cost to the customer.

For Australian residents, under the Australian Government Medicare Act, it is prohibited for any domestic travel insurance product to provide any financial reimbursement with regard to ambulance or air ambulance services. We therefore strongly advise our customers to take specific ambulance cover through their health insurance provider. Evacuation cost will not be covered by the OCT4 PTY LTD and therefore it is also strongly recommended that our customers take out travel insurance to cover (amongst other things) the costs associated with evacuation.

    Travel Insurance
In view of the heavy cancellation penalties applied to cancelled reservations in certain circumstances, we strongly recommends suitable travel insurance be purchased at the time the holding deposit is paid. We recommend insurance cover that covers any loss which may be suffered due to cancellation. We also strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance against loss of baggage and medical expenses.

    Accommodation
reviews The landscape of the Flinders Rangers was spectacular. We achieved the walk quite comfortably. The guides allowed plenty of time for us to soak up the marvellous scenery and take many photographs along the way. The two nights that we spent camping in the deluxe swag was different but comfortable. The final night accommodation was at the Arkaba which was cosy and personal. At dinner our guides and fellow walkers dined together sharing stories of the day. It was a very nice relaxed and friendly atmosphere. This was well organised hike. Everything was catered for and not a thing missed. Well done. .
